With the excitement of wanting to get rolling with your new toy it’s easy to omit the fact that certain licencing laws in Ontario and other jurisdictions may apply to your RV. As RV owners, it is up to you to be sure you meet all legal requirements to operate your new RV. Our instructors are fully certified and have years of experience to help you fully comprehend all aspects of RV inspections and defensive driving. Modern Training is Southern Ontario’s elite RV Training Center. Just ask your local RV Dealer Rep! Our training programs can be completed using your RV or we can offer the training on one of our trucks. The choice is yours.
The chart below will help you to determine the correct licence required to operate your RV.

Class D licence requirement for: A motor vehicle exceeding 11,000 Kilograms gross weight or registered gross weight or combination provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kilograms

  1. If your RV weighs less than 11,000Kgs with NO air brakes……………G Licence
  2. If your RV weighs more than 11,000Kgs with NO air brakes…………….D Licence
  3. If your RV weighs more than 11,000Kgs with air brakes………………….DZ Licence

Ontario RV Licence classes are based on the actual gross weight of the unit and not the actual length of the RV. This is a common misconception.
Please be advised when determining the actual weight of your RV you must have it fully loaded with all vacation gear and a full tank of fuel.

Transport Industry HR Manager

A great big thank you to all the staff at Modern Training Ontario in helping me obtain my DZ licence. As an owner of a Class A gas motorhome that can sometimes tip the scales and take me outside of my G class rating (and as someone who has diesel-pusher envy), I did my diligence and called various training centres. After speaking with Debbie Grbavac, I knew I had settled on the right place, as I was immediately impressed with her knowledge of the process and her willingness to work with my schedule. I was able to complete the two-day air brake course in my first week, and under the excellent tutelage of my driving instructor Mike Spanninga and a few hours behind the wheel of a 40+ foot MCI bus, I had successfully obtained my DZ licence in the second week.

As a 30 year retired member of a large city police service, I have easily spent thousands of hours on courses and training, and recognize good instruction when I see it. The curriculum was well taught, concise and relevant, and a real eye opener to the world of heavy trucking. If anyone is looking to better their skill set, upgrade a licence or is like me and wants to hit the open road in an RV, I heartily endorse Modern Training Ontario.
